Heavy Rains Batter Maharashtra: 21 Dead in Four Days, Red Alert Issued
At least 21 people have died in the last four days due to rain and flood-related incidents across Maharashtra. The deaths occurred in various districts as torrential rains lashed Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Konkan and other regions for the fourth consecutive day.
Nanded district is among the worst hit, with eight reported deaths due to severe flooding. In Mumbai, the India Meteorological Department recorded around 300 mm of rainfall, causing major disruptions in daily life.
The IMD has issued a red alert for the Vidharbha region. Due to safety risks, all train services between Pune and Mumbai have been suspended until further notice.
Thane and Raigad districts have declared holidays for schools and colleges. All primary schools in Patan, Jawli, Mahabaleshwar, Wai, Satara and Karad talukas will remain closed for two days as an orange alert remains in effect.
Around 350 people have been rescued after the Mithi river crossed the danger mark. They have been moved to safe shelters by disaster response teams.
Modak Sagar Dam is currently 98 per cent full. Authorities warn of possible overflow if heavy rains continue. Residents near the Vaitarna River downstream are urged to stay alert.
At Koyna Dam, all six radial gates have been opened. A total of 93,200 cusecs of water is being released into the riverbed. Agencies are on high alert and have been directed to take preventive steps in case of sudden water discharge.
